WOODLANDS

Many of Indiana’s forests are overgrown with invasive plants. We work at a natural progression that’s conducive to for “re-wilding” our forests and reclaiming land for indigenous species to flourish.

GARDENS

The materials we collect are great for structure building, like defining garden beds, building garden fences and even building bigger structures like arches and bōmas.

Habitats

A healthy Indiana ecosystem contains a variety creatures. Harvesting invasive plants is a great way to make way for indigenous species of plants and animals.

trail maintenance

( W H Y )

What if your hike was more like a guided tour through the woods. You would have no chance of getting lost along the trail, because it would be lined with sticks and debris and elegantly carved out of nature. You’d have a better chance of seeing nature, in all it’s majesty, because the debris attracts bugs, which attract small animals, which attract animals of prey… which means you have a great chance of seeing some wildlife on your journey through the woods. Also, on your tour, you might see points of interest; like natural gardens &/or bōmas, built right along the trail. A bōma is a structure built with surrounding natural materials provided in a given ecosystem (like trees, sticks, limbs, leaves, dirt, rocks, vines, etc.)

( H O W )

Breaking sticks and stacking wood along the trail will give the trail an inviting aesthetic. Adding leaves and natural compost along the outer banks of the trail will provide great habitats for insects and a prey-ground for small animals. Debris is a gift of nature, offering a second or third home for many plants, insects and animals. The nutrient rich debris can be arranged to create a beautiful sense of place while it fulfills its next function. It’s also likely to attract bigger animals of prey, like owls or the American Mink. In addition to the nature show, there will be points of interest along the trail, crafted by Michael Guggenheim and associates; these include natural gardens and bōmas. Michael would be an active manager of the land, which includes invasive species control, promotion of indigenous species and stormwater/erosion slowing.

( W H A T )

The goal of this project is to invite guests to spend more time engaging with the natural world and celebrate natural debris while it replenishes the forest. Whether it’s cutting fallen trees, clearing invasive plants, picking up sticks, or clearing some land - we’ll do it. We’ll repurpose the materials into a majestic trail, for you and your family to enjoy. In addition, we have plans to engrave natural and geological information on wood slates, so you may learn something too. But if not, at least you had a fun unique experience in nature.

Brush Piles

A brush pile is a mound or heap of woody vegetative materials and often serves as cover for particular wildlife species.

Process

BASE
Layered logs on the bottom provides space for animals to nest or take cover.

MIDDLE
Loosely formed sticks throughout the middle area allows sunlight and air to pass through.

TOP
Tightly packed sticks on top can be good protective cover against harsh weather conditions.
